Instructor Training Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a Basic Class certificate before taking NRA Instructor Training?

 Yes, an NRA Instructor candidate must have a Basic Class certificate in the specific discipline (pistol, rifle, shotgun) before they can take Instructor Training. If you don't have a certificate, then you must take the Basic Class and obtain one. There are no exceptions to this NRA mandate.

What if I can't find my Basic Class certificate?

 Contact the instructor and ask for another. This may cost you some money.

WhWhat does the Pistol pre-qualification include?

     Pre-qualifications for ALL disciplines are detailed on the NRA website used for registering for classes. Scroll down to see them. You can save / print.

a.     PHASE 1 - LOADING/UNLOADING

b.    PHASE 2 – CLEARING COMMON PISTOL STOPPAGES

c.     PHASE 3 – PISTOL SHOOTING

3.  What if I don’t pass the pre-qualification?

a.    A student, who fails the pre-qualification, cannot attend the class.

b.    The deposit can be applied to a future class.

4.   Where will the pre-qualification shooting be held?

a.    RTSP – Randolph, NJ   OR

                                          i.    First time shooters at this indoor range can download the necessary forms from RTSP Online, complete them and bring to the range the day of shooting. This will save time.

b.    Cherry Ridge Range in Vernon, NJ

c.    Students pay range fee

What are other NRA disciplines available for Instructor candidates?

     Note: Basic Instructor Training (BIT) is the foundation and must be current prior to registering for a discipline. 

  •  Pistol – 9.5 hours
  •   Rifle – 10 hours
  •   Shotgun – 11 hours
  •   PPIH – 9 hours
  •       o   Instructor candidates must be certified Pistol
  •   PPOH – 16 hours
  •      o   Instructor candidates must be certified Pistol and PPIH
  •   Home Firearm Safety – 5 hours
  •  Metallic Reloading

Do I have to be a member of the NRA to take the NRA Instructor Training?

        No, but it is highly recommended

NRA Qualification Target - Handgun

The target is a PDF file and will be sent to all students upon registration. Print off multiple copies and practice.

Details on scoring can be found in the Pre-Qualification description found on the NRA Web-site. Please practice!
