Below are some questions we have been asked on a regualr basis. Hopefully you will find the answer to any questions you may have. If not, just give us a call at 862-268-4888.
Yes, please bring a picture id and for most, a valid drivers license is sufficient. A student id or a passport is ok as well.
You can register for a class at the NRA Training website. Below is the link to the training page:
http://www.nhrainstructors.org/search.aspx
Just click the course you're interested in and then put in your zip code and mile radius (how far you're willing to travel) and up comes a schedule of classes within your mile radius.
If you don't find the class on the day you want, just drop me an email or give a call.
We can come to you! If you have a group of 3 or more and range access (for the shooting courses) and your location is within 75 miles of Hopatcong, NJ, we will come to you. This is for any of the classes below except Home Firearm Safety & Refuse to be a Victim. For these classes, the group needs to be a minimum of 6.
The class prices are found on the NRA Training website:
http://www.nhrainstructors.org/search.aspx
We do take credit cards - Visa, MasterCard & Discover.
Yes, you can do that. However, the schedule of classes is on the NRA web-site so there you will find what is available and when. If there is no class scheduled for the day you want, then we will certainly do our best to accomodate you.
No, you do not need to be a member of the NRA to take an NRA course. We, of course, encourage you to join the NRA but there is no obligation to do so.
Yes,
Bring a friend / relative to take the course with you and get a 10% discount for both.
It depends, each case would have to be considered.
If your firearm is in good working order and has been well maintained, the answer is yes. If the gun has been sitting in your grandparents attic for the forty years then the answer is probably no. Firearms can only be taken directly to the range and back. Please contact us prior to the class to discuss any firearms you wish to bring.
New shooters should seriously consider a .22 caliber handgun. This caliber has no recoil and allows the student to focus on the Five Fundamentals of Pistol shooting.
Yes, you can bring it as long as it is not re-loaded ammunition. It needs to be in the correct box and not rusted. Be sure it is the correct caliber for your firearm. If you have any doubts give me a call.
Yes, In New Jersey:

All of these have retail stores as well and there are guns you can shoot. Even though the gun you shot is not the exact gun you will buy, it may be the exact model or a similar model and thus provide you with the information you need.
Several handguns in various calibers are available for shooting, a small gun usage fee applies.
The NRA does not mandate an minimum age for taking a firearms course. Nor does the State of NJ. There are however, age requirements for the most ranges and, in general, the minimum age is 10. The First Steps Orientation classes are ideal for youngsters 10 -17 years of age. They are 3 to 4 hours in duration and use firearms that young people can handle, e.g. 22 cal pistols & rifles as well as a 20 gauge shotgun. A course certificate is provided for First Steps Orientation classes.
For young students (under the age of 18), one parent / relative is required to come with the youngster. The parent / relative may not have to take the course (see next question) but they need to be present at the training and the range exercises.
Please call or email with any specific concerns.
The First Steps classes offered by the NRA are an excellent way to introduce young shooters to the shooting sports. As we know, young shooters go to the range with adults.
As an NRA instructor, I need to ensure that those accompanying young shooters to a range have also been properly trained.
My policy is: adults accompanying young people (ages 10 through 17) to the class can “just watch” if they can provide proof of firearms training.
Note: A hunting license does not constitute proof of firearms training.
If the accompanying adult hasn't taken a firearms training course then they are required to register for the class along with their youngster. There is a 10% discount on the cost when both register.
Depending on the weather, the firearm exercises may be done at local ranges such as RTSP in Randolph, NJ (indoors); Cherry Ridge Range in Vernon, NJ or other available facilities. RTSP and Cherry Ridge Ranges are approxiately 30 minutes from the classroom in Hopatcong, NJ.
Yes, the NRA Home Firearm Safety Course is a Non-shooting course and teaches students the basic knowledge, skills, and attitude necessary for the safe handling & storage of firearms and ammunition in the home.
There is no dress code but avoid sandels and open shirts. Bullet shells are ejected from firearms and sometimes land on your person. These shells are often hot.
It is best to bring your own eye and ear protection especially if you wear glasses. Be sure you get good quality equipment as they will provide adequate safety. If you don't have either, please call or send an email so we can ensure we have enough for all students.
No. There is an exception for young students (under the age of 18) as I require a parent / relative to come with them. The parent / relative does not have to take the course but they need to be present at the training and the range shooting. Of course, there is also an exception for handicap students.
If you have taken formal firearms training, you can come to just shoot firearms. Please bring a copy of your training certificate with you. The cost is $85.00 per hour (with a minimum of 2 hours). Cost includes the use of the firearms, ammo, targets and range access.
Bring a friend / relative to take the course with you and get a 10% discount for both.
